SCHLADMING, Austria – Exeter native and U.S. Olympian Adam Craig capped off his International Cycling Union World Cup mountain biking season Sunday with a top-10 finish in the ninth and final event of the nine-race circuit.
Craig finished as the top American and eighth overall, 3 minutes, 32 seconds behind winner Christoph Sauser of Switzerland.
Craig went out with the leaders early in the eight-lap race, but gradually fell back before settling for his fourth top-10 finish of the season.
With the win, Sauser clinched second place in the World Cup point standings, trailing only two-time Olympic champion Julien Absalon of France, who had clinched that title before Sunday’s race.
Craig finished a career-best sixth in the World Cup point standings, which involves 181 of the world’s elite men’s mountain bikers. He also was the top American in the standings and one of two U.S. riders in the top 10, as fellow Olympian Todd Wells finished 10th in the final World Cup standings.
Wells finished 11th in the Schladming race, 4:09 behind Sauser.
