AUBURN – A Lisbon man was reported to be in satisfactory condition with a gunshot wound to his left hip Tuesday after being shot during a chase by police who were on the lookout for a suspect in a reported theft.
Bartolo Ford, 47, who police said fled a concrete business in Auburn in a truck Monday night, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after being found not far from the abandoned truck in Poland.
During the chase, Ford allegedly rammed his 1-ton dump truck into two police cruisers and tried to ram a third before his truck struck two parked civilian vehicles.
Auburn Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen said in a statement that an officer who wounded Ford after Ford rammed his cruiser, Cpl. Kristopher Bouchard, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the state Attorney General’s Office and the Auburn Police Department.
Moen said charges against Ford were pending.
The statement said the incident began around 9 p.m. Monday with the report of theft at Superior Concrete on Minot Avenue.
According to Moen, more than 25 officers from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department and the Lewiston Police Department assisted Auburn police and that Poland Fire and Rescue and United Ambulance also responded.
