The public is invited to the Eastern Maine Community College annual Autumn Shindig, a scholarship fundraiser and auction, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Spectacular Event Center on Griffin Road in Bangor.

Elizabeth Clayton of EMCC wrote this is a “denim preferred, flannel optional” event, featuring the live music of The Doughty Hill Band, a delicious fall feast and a select number of auction items.

Laura Mitchell wrote that the Bangor Memory Walk begins with registration at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bangor Raceway in Bass Park.

The event features brief presentations at 9 a.m. by Virginia Dwyer, 53, about her strategy for living with Alzheimer’s disease, and Elizabeth Arps sharing her family’s story of how her father’s diagnosis, at 54, affected the lives of all family members.

Honorary walk chair, University of Maine women’s basketball coach Cindy Blodgett, will help participants get warmed-up and stretched-out for the 3-mile walk in the Fairmount Park area of Bangor.

All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter.

Sharon Boucher reports the Penobscot County Special Oympics fly-in is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Bangor International Airport general aviation terminal. The rain date is Oct. 5.

Sightseeing plane rides are $20.

Lois Field wrote a benefit supper to raise funds for the Neighbor Helping Neighbor weatherization project for homes of families in need, is 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the American Legion Hall on Grove Street in Dexter.

The supper has been organized by Maurice and Corinne Neal, with donations of food from area churches. The meal includes casseroles, salads, homemade rolls, dessert and beverages.

Admission is by donation, and you are urged to “please come and help warm up your neighbor.”

In addition, Field explained that the Dexter Energy Committee will conduct a weatherization workshop Saturday and Sunday Oct. 11-12, with volunteers going door-to-door to distribute and install plastic storm window kits to help button up old homes to make them more comfortable and safer this winter.

Martha Goodale reports Monroe Community Library is holding the fourth annual Monroe Art Show from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Monroe Town Hall at the intersection of Routes 141 and 139.

Goodale wrote that more than 20 artists are represented this year, with a number of new artists participating.

Refreshments will be served, and the show is free and open to the public.

Judy Gallant e-mailed that Emmanuel Baptist Church will hold a benefit baked bean supper for the Wings of Love program from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the church, 98 Lincolnville Ave., Belfast.

Wings of Love is a program that provides toys and winter clothes for the children of Waldo County during the holiday season, Gallant wrote.

Mary Laury, executive director of Schoodic Arts for All in Winter Harbor, reminds area residents SAA fall workshops begin Saturday, Oct. 4, and continue through November.

Adults can take a raku workshop by Anna Woolf and Neale LaSalle and learn the ancient Japanese method of firing pottery; people 13 and older can take beginning batik with Penny Altman.

Those 15 and older can learn pinned stack stone sculpture taught by Obadiah Buell, and teens and adults can make twig furniture with Barbara Bowen.

Art for Your Floor, with Doris Combs and Essie Sherman, is open for those 14 to adult; older teens and adults can make quilted tote bags with Jan Blackney; people 13 and older can take ballroom swing and waltz lessons with Laury; and Biddy Esher will teach those with knitting experience how to knit two socks at once.

The workshops will be held at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor, Las Sirenas Gallery in Prospect Harbor and Buell Quarry in Sullivan.
