CANDIDATE PROFILE

House District 43

Belfast-Northport area

Republican

Jayne Crosby Giles

Age: 52

Hometown: Belfast

Address: 15 Tozier St.

Web site: www.jayneformaine2008.com

Education: Stonier Graduate School of Banking, University of Delaware, Newark, Del.; B.A. in economics, Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass.; Belfast Area High School

Family: Married to Mike Giles; three grown children

Occupation: Community banker, vice president of Machias Savings Bank

Experience: House member in 123rd Maine Legislature; served on Appropriations Committee; 30 years’ experience in banking

Reason for running: During my first term, I achieved a 100 percent voting attendance. On the Appropriations Committee, I helped balance the state’s $190 million revenue shortfall. I served on a special commission to expand job opportunities, plus a subcommittee studying prison overcrowding. With re-election, I want to focus on the top needs for Maine’s residents: energy, economy, health care, education and environment.

Democrat

Harold E. ‘Hal ‘ Halliday

Age: 68

Hometown: Belfast

Address: 100 Cedar St.

Education: Skowhegan High School; B.A. in education, University of Maine in Orono

Family: Married; four children

Occupation: Retired

Experience: Teacher 42 years, athletic director, coach; served as president and negotiator of my local union in SAD 34 for many years; was also a representative to the state and national education associations.

Reason for running: I am running for office because I feel that I can serve all the people of my district with the same enthusiasm and caring with which I served the staff at SAD 34. My major concerns, and therefore the things that I will fight strongly for, are, besides assuring that everyone is kept warm this winter, fairly funded education at all levels, health care for all, fair wages and fair labor laws for all.
