Bedard powers Bears past Catamounts

ORONO – Tara Bedard scored three goals and added an assist to power the University of Maine to a 5-1 college field hockey victory over Vermont on Sunday.

Kristy Ferran and Jen Johnstone knocked in a goal apiece for the Black Bears, now 8-5. Kim Leo and Morgan Brady assisted on Johnstone’s goal, which came off a penalty corner. Jaye Lance made four saves on five shots.

Shawna Carney scored a goal for the 6-8 Catamounts. Holly Colberg saved 13 of 18 shots.

UM-Farmington 2, Husson 0

At Farmington, Nikki Levesque and Katie Bernier scored goals to lead the Beavers past rival Husson on Saturday.

Mary Kate Williams and Sara Dailey assisted on the scores for 6-4 UM-Farmington. Fawn Albert made 15 saves on 15 shots.

Shani Hollins made 18 saves on 20 shots for 6-2 Husson.

Husson 1, Thomas 0

At Bangor, Crystal Strout scored a goal and Shani Hollin made two saves on five shots to help the Braves inprove to 7-2.

Dee Kelly made 20 saves on 23 shots for the Terriers.

USM 2, UMass-Dartmouth 0

At Gorham Saturday, Liza Barker scored one goal and assisted on another as the Huskies topped the Corsairs.

Barker scored the eventual game-winner with 3:30 left in the first half. She set up a goal by Renee Heath in the second half. Andrea Guerrette made three saves on four shots for 9-6 Southern Maine.

Meaghan Apostolec stopped five of 10 shots for 3-10 UMass-Dartmouth.

Women’s soccer

Boston U 2, Maine 1 (2OT)

At Orono, Melissa Shulman scored her second goal of the day just 28 seconds into the second overtime to give the Terriers the victory.

Shulman also scored at the 85:17 mark to tie the game for BU, which improved to 8-4-1, 6-0-1 in America East. The Terriers have not lost a league contest in two years. Jessica Clinton made four saves.

Katie Hodge gave the Black Bears a lead 20:53 into the game when she converted a Kate Crawford assist. Naomi Welsh made six saves for 5-3-3 (2-2-2) Maine.

UM-Farmington 4, Husson 2

At Farmington Saturday, Megan Woodcock scored three of the Beavers’ four goals as they rolled to the win.

Erin Findlan added a goal for UMF, now 10-3. Alyson Pontbriand and Dawn Robertson combined for seven saves on nine shots.

Kristin Pelletier scored on a penalty kick and assisted on a Melissa Achorn goal. Meg Taylor saved 20 of 24 shots for the 7-5 Braves of Bangor.

UM-Machias 7, Thomas 2

At Machias Saturday, Sara Ricker scored twice and Tania Hart scored two goals apiece to lead the Clippers past the Terriers.

Shelley Hayden had a goal and an assist for UM-Machias. Stefany Hannen and Emma Aptau each added a goal. Liz Rancourt and Christina Rich has an assist apiece. Tricia Farrell made 15 saves on 20 shots.

Mary Pratt and Kate Morrell each put in a second-half goal for Thomas of Waterville. Shauna Lessard and Kendra Pelow combined for 16 saves on 28 shots.

UM-Presque Isle 2, UMM 0

At Machias Sunday, Kelly Flanagin and Stephanie Gagnon booted in goals as UM-Presque Isle dealt UM-Machias its first loss of the season.

Goalie Vanessa Cirinni earned the shutout, facing 12 shots. The Owls improved to 6-5.

The Clippers dropped to 11-1.

UM-Presque Isle 3, St. Joseph’s 2

At Standish Saturday, UM-Presque Isle jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off St. Joseph’s for the win.

Tara Cropley’s score on a pass from Monique Daniel 25 seconds into the second half proved to be the game-winner. Lukie Gagnon and Megan Amero added goals and Steph Gagnon dished out two assists for the 5-5 Owls. Noreen Marcino recorded six saves on seven shots.

For the 3-4 Monks, Katie Doucette and Mary Gill booted goals and Bethany Dallaire garnered an assist. Marissa Regan made seven saves on 10 shots.

St. Joseph’s 4, UM-Fort Kent 0

At Standish Sunday, Mary Gill pounded in a pair of goals as St. Joseph’s blanked UM-Fort Kent.

Kelly Cyr and Tiffany Merill tallied unassisted goals while Jaclyn Morrill and Katie Doucette added assists. Marissa Regan made eight saves on 10 shots as the Monks improved to 6-7.

For the 3-7 Bengals, Joy Jarvais notched 10 saves on 20 shots.

Men’s soccer

UM-Fort Kent 3, MMA 2 (2OT)

At Castine Saturday, Hatim Aboyahya tallied the game-winner on a breakaway in the second overtime to lift the Bengals past the Mariners.

Aboyahya gave 6-4-1 UMFK a lead with a second-half goal on an assisted by Neal Jandreau. Josh Roy scored the Bengals’ first goal on a penalty kick. James Page had four saves on 24 shots.

Wels Baker and Seth Warner combined on both goals for 2-9 Maine Maritime. Warner scored the tying goal in the 88th minute and Dan Loebel made three saves on 13 shots.

UM-Farmington 4, Husson 0

At Farmington Saturday, Jeff Meinhart knocked in two goals to power the Beavers to the win.

Lars Sjulander added a goal on a cross from Tim Ghelli and Pat Dugas set up Adam Zukowski. Brian Mawhinney assisted on Meinhart’s second goal. Mike Hauser and Ryan Hersey combined for two saves on two shots.

Cliff Urquhart stopped 12 of 27 shots for the 0-10-1 Braves of Bangor.

UM-Machias 5, Unity 1

At Machias Saturday, Tatenda Chirusa recorded a hat trick and Brett Howarth scored two goals as UM-Machias rolled over Unity.

Matt Salyer, Jamie Beckwith and Tim Spry chipped in with assists for the 4-7 Clippers. Goalie Andy Swift faced eight shots.

For 7-4-1 Unity, Jimmy Valvine converted a pass from Michael Alvarez. Eric Cantini faced 28 shots.

Boston University 4, Maine 3

At Boston University Sunday, Norwegian senior Joachim Kaland took a pass from Markus Raisanen, made a 25-yard run down the middle of the field and beat Maine goalie Adam Maciazczyk with a 15-yard shot with 5:48 remaining to give BU its win over Maine. It was his second goal of the game.

BU is 7-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in America East. Maine is 1-9 and 0-5, respectively.

Federico Bianchi and Mark Lynch had the other BU goals as the Terriers built a 3-1 lead. Andrew Dorman and Michael Feely had assists as did Raisanen and Zak Thompson made three saves on nine shots.

Junior striker Rob Dow scored all three Black Bear goals. Greg Bajek had an assist and Maciazczyk finished with eight saves on 21 shots.

UMFK 2, St. Joseph’s 1 (OT)

At Fort Kent Sunday, Aadil Mootassem scored the game-winner five minutes into overtime to lead the Bengals past the Monks.

Juan Murphy assisted on the winner. Mootassem set up Murphy with four minutes left in regulation to tie the game for UM-Fort Kent, now 7-4-1. James Page and Zac Cote combined for five saves on six shots.

Matt Grauwiler scored an unassisted goal for 6-5 St. Joseph’s. Nick Wallace made six saves on eight shots.

UM-Machias 2, UMPI 1 (OT)

At Machias Sunday, Tatenda Chirusa fired in a pass from Dwayne Josiah five minutes into overtime to lift UM-Machias to the win.

Chirusa also had the first goal for the 5-7 Clippers. Goalie Courtenay Campbell faced eight shots.

For 4-7 UM-Presque Isle, Darren Belskis recorded a goal. Joe Cole faced 19 shots.

St. Joseph’s 1, UM-Presque Isle 0

At Presque Isle Saturday, Mike Herrick scored an unassisted goal 23 minutes into the first half as the Monks held off the Owls.

Nick Wallace and Jeff Yaeger combined to make six saves on six shots for 7-4 St. Joseph’s of Standish.

Jon Cole made two saves on three shots for 5-5 UMPI.

UMass-Dartmouth 1, USM 0

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Saturday, Darren Sutton headed in the game-winner as the Corsairs downed the Huskies of Gorham.

Jorge Fonseca made three saves on three shots for 10-3 UMass-Dartmouth.

Dan Hills stopped seven of eight shots for 2-13-1 Southern Maine.
