FREDERICTON, New Brunswick – Senior left wing Chris Hahn’s power-play goal 3:33 into the third period snapped a 4-4 tie and gave the University of Maine a 5-4 men’s hockey exhibition victory over the University of New Brunswick at the Aitken University Centre Friday night.

The two teams will play again tonight at 6.

It was Hahn’s second of the game and Maine’s third power-play goal.

It was set up by freshman defenseman Ryan Hegarty’s blast from the point.

“Tanner [House] and I were at the net-front and [Hegarty] got his shot through,” explained Hahn. “It hit Tanner in the chest and dropped between my feet. I had the empty net.

“I was at the back door, off to the side. I slid it under the goalie’s [Derek Yeomans] arm before he could get back over. He was already down.”

Simon Danis-Pepin also picked up an assist.

The Black Bears jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period as power-play goals by House and Jeff Dimmen made it 2-0 and chased starting goalie Travis Fullerton in favor of Yeomans.

Dion Campbell cut the lead in half, but Hahn restored the two-goal lead with 6:13 left in the period.

Freshman Gustav Nyquist extended the lead to 4-1 early in the second period, but the Varsity Reds tied it on goals by Daine Todd, Josh Hepditch and Hunter Tremblay.

Nyquist and House each had an assist to go with their goals, and Hegarty had two assists.

Junior goalie Dave Wilson made 34 saves.

Campbell had an assist to go with his goal.

Fullerton made two saves on four shots and Yeomans made 16 saves on 19 shots.

Maine went 3-for-5 on the power play while the Varsity Reds failed to convert on seven chances.

“Our power play was pretty good,” said House. “We had a lot of shots and we got a couple of good bounces. And our penalty-killing was really good.”

“The special teams were the difference in the game,” said Maine coach Tim Whitehead.

Whitehead said he was “very pleased” with his team’s performance, “especially considering it was our first game and they’ve played nine.”

“I liked how our guys competed. They won a tough, one-goal game,” added Whitehead.

He praised the performance turned in by Wilson.

“He had a great third period. They had a lot of scramble situations. But he dug his skates in and made some big stops,” said Whitehead.

In assessing his outing, Wilson said, “There were a couple of goals I’d like to have back, but I thought I played pretty well.

“The biggest thing is we tightened up real well in the third period. After we got that goal, the defense played real well and kept them to the outside.”

UNB shots did hit the crossbar and the outside of a post in the third period.

Whitehead said sophomore center Glenn Belmore twisted his knee in the first period and didn’t return. He won’t play tonight.

Freshman Scott Darling will get the start in net tonight.

Whitehead said he would like to see his team do a better job protecting the net-front and avoiding stick penalties.

“This was a real good test for us,” said House. “They’re a good team. They move the puck well and competed really hard. We had a good team effort.”
