DeHaan goals get USM past Colby

GORHAM – Heidi DeHaan scored her second goal and the game-winner with 2 1/2 minutes left in the second overtime to lead the University of Southern Maine women past Colby College of Waterville 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

The 4-7-1 USM Huskies’ victory snapped a seven-game winless streak. Alison Bradley made nine saves on 16 shots.

For the 4-5 Mules, Hannah Holbrook scored the goal. Loni Pisani did not get a save as she faced three shots.

Harvard 4, Maine 1

At Cambridge, Mass., Harvard received unanswered first-half goals from Melanie Baskind, Gina Wideroff and Patricia Yau en route to its win over Maine.

Christina Hagner added an insurance goal after Maine’s Kelsey Wilson cut the lead to 3-1 off a Christine LaBelle assist.

Katherine Sheeleigh, Kelli Okuji, Hana Taiji and Kerry Kartsonis had assists for the 6-3-3 Crimson and Laura Dale and Maggie Robinson combined for five saves on 12 shots.

Jasmine Phillips made five saves on 15 shots for Maine, which is now 5-4-5 and winless in its last three (0-2-1).

The four goals were the most allowed by Maine this season. The previous high was two.

Field hockey

Husson 8, Thomas 2

At Bangor, Erica Dorso had a hat trick and also dished out three assists as Husson University improved to 3-7.

Erin Nason had a pair of goals with Jillian Morin, Courtney Allen and Elisha Dorso collecting the other goals. Michelle Barden and Krysal Doughty had assists and Caroline Bochtler made seven saves on 12 shots.

Ali Kriegel and Brittany Moore scored for 3-9 Thomas College of Waterville and Megan Denby made 13 saves on 31 shots.

Men’s soccer

Mount Ida 2, St. Joseph’s 1

At Newton Centre, Mass., Hayato Kanesaka netted the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute to give Mount Ida College the victory over Saint Joseph’s College.

Brian Leighton made four saves on 14 shots for the 7-4-3 Mustangs.

Doug McCallum netted the goal for Saint Joseph’s. Will Pike blocked five of 20 shots for the 6-4-3 Monks.

UM-Farmington 3, USM 1

At Farmington, James Tollefson scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers by the University of Southern Maine.

Sean Ralph of Waterville and Michael Camacho each scored a goal for the 5-6 Beavers. Matthew Dennett of Augusta made 10 saves on 15 shots.

For the 9-5-1 Huskies, Greg Cox scored the only goal. David Kreps saved four of 12 shots.
