ORONO – Nicole Palazzo’s unassisted power-play goal 6:15 into the third period and Amanda Nagel’s 42 saves gave Sacred Heart a 3-2 women’s hockey victory over the University of Maine on Friday, its first win over the Black Bears in nine tries.
Lexie Hoffmeyer’s first-period, power-power goal staked Maine to a 1-0 lead with Dominique Goutsis and Vanessa Vani picking up assists. But Kate Dunlop tied it up later in the period for 1-1 Sacred Heart off a Taryn LaPierre assist.
Abby Barton regained the lead for the 1-4 Black Bears in the second period but Lauren Fontaine’s power-play goal knotted things up later in the period. Amy Stech and Dawn Sullivan had assists on the Barton goal with Palazzo and Whitney Dziama assisting on Fontaine’s goal.
UMaine received 16 saves from Genevieve Turgeon and absorbed its fourth straight loss.
The teams play again today at 2.
