Mariners rally past rival Bucs Bower gains 210 yards, scores 3 touchdowns

CASTINE – Fullback Jim Bower piled up 210 yards on 37 carries, turning in fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 13 and 9 yards, as Maine Maritime Academy pulled away to post a 26-7 New England Football Conference victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy at Ritchie Field on Saturday.

Quarterback Tyler Angell’s 29-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter put the Mariners in front for good. He netted 109 yards on 21 carries for the Mariners, who won the Admirals Cup for the fifth straight year in the rivalry with Massachusetts Maritime.

Angell also added a 24-yard TD scamper.

Kyle Moon threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Colin Teehan for the 0-7 Buccaneers.

Defensive back Rob Leighton set a Maine Maritime record with his 13th career interception. Wade Mondoux provided 10 tackles and an interception for the Mariners while Steve Keroack had seven tackles, five for a loss.

Husson 49, SUNY Maritime 14

At Throggs Neck, N.Y., tailbacks Julius Williams and Justin Lindie of Winslow combined to rush for 290 yards and six touchdowns as the Eagles posted their fifth win.

Williams netted 180 yards on 23 carries and turned in scoring runs of 4, 1, 4 and 5 yards. Lindie carried 18 times for 110 yards with two 12-yard touchdowns scampers.

James McCandless went 9-for-13 passing good for 165 yards and a touchdown and was not intercepted. James Dobson made seven catches for 146 yards, one of them a 56-yard TD reception.

Husson broke a 7-7 tie on the McCandless to Dobson hookup and then scored twice more in the first half to begin the rout. The Eagles amassed 486 yards of offense, including 321 on the ground.

Keith Runne paced Husson with six tackles, while Cory Smith posted five tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. Doug Blades made an interception.

Jamie Spanopoulos rushed for 71 yards and a TD to lead SUNY Maritime College.

At Middlebury, Vt., Donald McKillop passed for 247 yards and two scores and also rushed for two touchdowns to power the Panthers past the Bobcats from Lewiston.
