While I was on vacation last week, Brewer Middle School coordinator Rich Kimball kindly left me a detailed message about Brewer Youth Theatre’s current production, which some of you already may have enjoyed, and others of you still will be able to enjoy.
Kimball reported that BYT is presenting the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical version of the fairy tale “Cinderella,” beginning at 7 each night: Thursday, Oct. 23, Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.
Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students, $10 for families.
“This is the version that was on television, first in the ’50s, with Julie Andrews; in the ’60s, with Lesley Ann Warren; then, I think, again in late ’90s, with Whitney Houston,” Kimball said.
When you watch this BCT performance, you will find Tess McLaughlin, daughter of our very own sports editor Joe McLaughlin, playing Cinderella, and Jamie Bartol as Prince Charming.
Kimball reports that the cast includes 30 high school students and that the production “should be a lot of fun, for the whole family. So, hopefully, we’ll get a big crowd.”
It’s a pleasure every time to report on the activities of this group, which brings such great local theater to the Brewer area.
From Ruth Yerkes of Surry comes word that now through Friday, Oct. 24, Surry Elementary School pupils are conducting a walkathon to benefit an Amazon rain forest library.
Yerkes wrote that the pupils “will seek pledges for minutes and miles walked” for the fundraiser, which will help “purchase books for a library serving children in Yanamono and Palmeras, Peru.”
Yerkes said this is the seventh year the SES student council “has sponsored fundraisers for the library they learned about when Paula Mrozicki, a teacher from the school, spent time there and came back to share her concerns with the school family.”

Karen Cashman of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer reminds seniors that “the single best way to protect against the flu is to get immunized each year.”
Among those who should be vaccinated each year, Cashman wrote, are people 50 and older; people with chronic medical conditions; who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities; who live with, or care for, those at high risk for complications from flu, including health care workers; children 6 to 19 months old and pregnant women.
At the following clinics, a flu shot is $35, but many insurance plans will cover this cost, including Medicare, she added. Cashman does suggest you check with your insurance carrier before receiving the vaccination.
You can get flu shots 3 to 6 p.m. today at Airline Pharmacy in Brewer; 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Miller Drug in Bangor; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, at Miller Drug; 3 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Airline Pharmacy; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at Airline Pharmacy and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 at Miller Drug.
