Children invited to trick-or-treat with UMares

Children (and adults, too) who love horses, wrote Nonnie Daly, are cordially invited to trick-or-treat with the UMares from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Horse Barn at the Witter Farm Complex off College Avenue in Old Town.

Sponsored by the UMaine Equine Management Co-op students, “along with members of our Equestrian and Standardbred Drill Teams,” Daly wrote, “some of the University’s wonderful, retired harness-racing mares (perhaps some even in costume) will be ready and waiting to greet children who would like to trick or treat” there.

Youngsters will enjoy stall-to-stall trick-or-treating and meeting Dewey, Daisy, Cheer and some other “truly remarkable horses,” Daly wrote.

For more information or directions, e-mail Nonni.Daly@umit.Maine.edu or Leigh McIlvain at leigh.mcilvain@umit.Maine.edu.

Vicki Blanchette and I each made an error in reporting on the planting of the University of Maine Pink Tulip Garden.

It is the third, not second, annual event, and it will take place at noon Thursday, Oct. 30, not Oct. 12, in front of Fogler Library on the mall on the university campus in Orono.

Ivy Turner and the Women’s Fellowship of Perry Congregational Church invite you to their Yard, Craft and Bake Sale, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the church on Shore Road.

For a suggested donation of $35 (or any amount you wish to donate) you are invited to An Evening of WomanSong, Poetry and Music from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Minsky Recital Hall on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Proceeds benefit the Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center in Bangor.

Cindy Collins of MWWHC says the entertainment will be classical performances by university faculty and graduate students, and include readings of original works by area writers and poets.

The theme of the evening will be to celebrate women, their “accomplishments, triumphs, frailties, challenges, loss, joy,” Collins wrote, “and to honor the work of [the late] Mabel Wadsworth and the center that bears her name.”

Karylyn Lyman reports the Monson Recreation Committee is sponsoring a Harvest Dinner to help raise funds for “local fuel assistance.”

The boiled dinner of ham, cabbage, carrots and potatoes, along with coffee, punch and dessert begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Monson Gym.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for children, $15 for a family of four.

Proceeds will benefit people in need in the area.

This “fun” fundraiser also includes music and a 50-50 raffle, with the winning ticket being drawn at the dinner.

Here’s a twist on the hunters breakfast: Now you can eat after you hunt.

Donna Stanhope e-mailed that admission is by donation for the Carmel Fire & Rescue Hunters’ Supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Golden Harvest Grange Hall on Main Road in Carmel.

Stanhope and the crew hope you will enjoy the meal that includes beef stew, chili, biscuits and a variety of pies.

Ann Carter e-mailed the annual Charlotte Craft Sale is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Charlotte School on Ayers Road, Route 214.

Airlia Britt reports some seats remain for the eighth annual All Saints Catholic School Scholarship Super Supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Bangor Motor Inn and Conference Center.

The cost of the tickets for dinner for two is $250 and offers the opportunity to “win many wonderful prizes, including a chance to win the grand prize of $10,000,” Britt wrote.
