Several area organizations will benefit from your attendance at the third annual Sparkle fundraiser, “The Party You Won’t Want to Miss,” Linda Lougee reports.

Sparkle is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., followed by dancing, Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Millennium Wedding and Convention Center in Palmyra.

Tickets are $30 for singles, $50 for couples, and tickets and information can be obtained by calling the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce at 368-4698 or e-mailing svcc@midmaine.com.

Lougee says this year’s event will features a silent and live auction, entertainment by area jazz ensembles, hearty hors d’oeuvres, a fashion show, pocket raffle and other entertainment.

Sponsored by the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce, Lougee describes this event “as a fun way to earn money for the Chamber and different organizations in the towns that belong to the Chamber.”

Representatives of “all of the chosen charities work on this event,” she said and, in two years, Sparkle has provided “almost $25,000 for the chosen charities,” she added.

This year beneficiaries of Sparkle will be the Corinna Rec Department, Detroit Meeting House, Newport Cub Scout Pack No. 63, Newport Cultural Center, Newport Woman’s Club, Palmyra Park Boosters, Pittsfield Community Pool, Pittsfield Library Building Fund, Stetson Historical Society, Stetson War Memorial and Valley Arts Alliance.

Col. Jackson Kurtzman has announced the Great Bangor Veterans Day Parade planning meeting begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Bangor High School on Broadway.

Kurtzman urges “representative of all veterans’ organizations, and all who may be interested in the Veterans Day Parade,” to attend this meeting.

Iris Simon e-mailed that Maine Coast Memorial Hospital will hold a free Health and Wellness Expo from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the VFW Hall on East Main Street in Ellsworth.

The Expo “will offer free assistance with Medicare Part D, property tax-rent relief, home heating, adult day care, prescription assistance, estate planning, balance-body fat analysis and much more,” Simon wrote.

MaineCare and Medicare will be accepted for flu shots that will be available for $14, and cholesterol screenings will be available for $10. Appointments are required for cholesterol screenings and can be made by calling MCMH HealthLink at 667-2474.

Attendees will have a chance to win a half-hour massage, a gift basket or a Downeast YMCA adult membership.

Jackie Nicholson reports the public is invited to attend a meeting of the Hancock Woman’s Club at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Hancock Community Center on Route 1.

Richard C. “Dick” Hill, a retired emeritus professor of engineering at the University of Maine, will discuss alternative energy.

Nicholson added that refreshments will be served; the evening will end with a short business meeting; and HWC members are reminded to bring a nonperishable food item for the club’s annual food pantry donation.

“Skip” Smith and members of the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department invite you to their auction at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Newburgh Elementary School.

Popular local volunteer auctioneer Frank Coombs will be calling for your bids on everything from tools to Christmas trees, Smith said of the event that features “all new items.”

Proceeds will help purchase additional equipment to augment the town’s recent acquisition of a Jaws of Life by enabling the department to obtain “hoses and other attachments” for the new unit, Smith explained.

Sincere congratulations are extended to staff, volunteers and supporters of Spruce Run Association, celebrating 35 years of fulfilling its mission by helping to “change attitudes, save lives and end abuse” in Penobscot County.

Spruce Run’s 35th anniversary homecoming will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Wells Conference Center at the University of Maine in Orono.

Presentations include Somebody Else Was Us, a readers’ theater narrative by the founders of Spruce Run and the Feminist Oral History Project at UMaine, the Spontaneous Jazz Ensemble, and refreshments.
