Hannaford among most healthful stores

A national magazine has ranked the Maine-based Hannaford supermarket chain one of the nation’s 10 most healthful grocery stores.

The November issue of Health ranked the chain fifth out of the 10 in a survey, citing its standing as the largest certified-organic supermarket in the region and its dedication to local food. Shoppers at the chain can select from among 50 local and organic products from 200 farms in the region.

“The idea that a supermarket can be a helper in staying well is somewhat of a new concept,” said Michael Norton, spokesman for the Scarborough-based Hannaford. “It’s really nice that they recognized local produce. That was really gratifying to see that.”

One contest judge singled out the produce for praise.

“It’s an impressive amount of local produce, which is not that easy in temperate New England,” said Kate Geagan, a nutrition consultant.”

The Hannaford Bros. Co. employs more than 27,000 people in its 167 stores across New England and New York state.

The stores also were cited for their free nutrition classes and innovative Guiding Stars program, a three-star system designed to make nutritious shopping simple for consumers. Foods throughout the store can earn one, two or three stars corresponding to good, better and best nutrition levels.
