Teller guides police to credit union robber

BIDDEFORD – A 27-year-old suspect was in custody Thursday after an armed robbery that began when a man jumped to the front of the teller line at a Biddeford credit union after joking with fellow customers about robbing the bank, police said.

An employee of Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union overheard the talk and called police. They arrived at the scene within two minutes Thursday afternoon and took Anthony Hayes of Biddeford into custody.

A police dispatcher kept the employee on the phone as she furnished a description of the man and then said, “He jumped the teller line, he jumped the teller line.” The caller described how the robber was taking cash as dispatchers relayed the information to patrol officers.

Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk said Hayes was being turned over to the FBI. She declined to say how much money was taken or what weapon was used during the robbery.
