Club’s model train show Saturday in Brewer

The Eastern Maine Model Railroad Club will hold its 32nd annual Train Show and Sale, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer, wrote Bill Soule of Orono, in reminding readers that “it’s train time again!”

Admission is $4, free for children under 12 for this event at which visitors can buy or sell train articles in silent auctions.

Toy and model trains and “railroadiana” will be offered by 40 vendors, and the club’s modular HO-scale layout “will feature digital control with the latest in digital sound effects,” Soule wrote.

And, as always, without cost to you, at this show, the “Train Doctor” will diagnose your “train troubles” and make minor repairs.

Refreshments will be on sale and more information is available by e-mailing Soule at soule@Maine.edu.

The All Souls Congregational Church music director, Kay Eames, invites the public to enjoy a concert featuring the work of Antonio Vivaldi at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at the church, 10 Broadway in Bangor.

“A Vivaldi Sampler” will feature pianist and organist Eames, the All Souls Senior Choir, flutist Liz Downing, violinists Janet Ciano and Nathan Hillman and soprano Karen Pendleton.

There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated. For more information, call the church at 942-7354.

Beth Lambert reports a free Thanksgiving Day Community Supper will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, at the Mariaville Grange.

Sponsored by the What’s for Suppa? Food Pantry, the traditional meal will include “turkey, ham and all the trimmings,” Lambert wrote.

“All are welcome to the feast,” and “potluck dishes are welcome, but not necessary.”

If you plan to attend, would like to help out with this event, or want more information, call 537-3452 or 537-5950.

Recognizing that the day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, members of First United Methodist Church of Brewer have chosen this particular day to hold the second of their fundraisers to benefit the Brewer Community Council Fuel Fund, reports Mission Committee member Eva Benson.

A Shoppers Pancake Breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at the church, 40 North Main St., Brewer.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

The meal includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, juice and coffee.

Orono Land Trust volunteer Peggy Markson has news about a special OLT Holiday Fundraiser featuring ecofriendly shopping bags.

OLT offers you the opportunity to “be green during this holiday season” by purchasing “lightweight, polypropylene shopping bags” for $5 each or five for $20.

The bags are tan “with a large, blue and green OLT logo,” Markson wrote of the bags that are 20 inches wide, 16 inches high and 6 inches deep with a 28-inch carrying strap.

She believes they would make great gifts, and you can order them at www.oronolandtrust.org.

The bags will be delivered, free, in the Orono area.

Home Living of Hampden administrator Denise Dinsmore e-mailed that the organization is seeking gifts for its residents for the holiday season.

Home Living has two, bed-supported facilities that “provide housing for adults with developmental disabilities in the Hampden area,” Dinsmore said.

While some of its residents “have active family members,” others do not, so Home Living “tries to provide a great holiday season for its residents.”

Among the requested gifts are PG movies, personal care items for men and women, movie passes and pizza and Wal-Mart gift cards.

“Also, if anyone would like to donate cash toward a Home Living horse-drawn sleigh ride,” Dinsmore wrote, “the residents and staff would be delighted.”

If you can help, in any way, send donations to Home Living, 9 Emerson Drive, Hampden 04444, or call Dinsmore at 862-2358.

My condolences are extended the family of Barbara Hess who died last week in Bangor.

I had the pleasure of knowing Barbara not only through our membership in the Bangor Junior League, The Quipus and other community organizations and endeavors, but through children as well.

Barbara was a devoted, respected and admired lady, dearly loved by family and friends for whom she created many wonderful, lasting memories.
