CLIFTON – A Brewer man was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and operating under the influence of intoxicants Tuesday night.

According to police, Jeffrey Gordon, 46, sped through a stop sign at the intersection of Chick Hill Road and Route 9 at about 9 p.m., missed a turn and lost control of his 1999 Oldsmobile.

Gordon was alone in the car, which first hit a mailbox and then three “very large boulders,” according to Sgt. William Sheehan of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

“He must have been moving kind of fast. Those rocks were huge, and he just plowed through them,” Sheehan said.

After the car came to a stop, Sheehan – who was unhurt – tried to drive away but the car was stuck, Sheehan said. By this time, the accident had been reported and crews from the Eddington Fire Department were trying to help Gordon, but he evidently wasn’t interested.

Gordon walked back up Chick Hill Road away from his car and rescue crews, despite the heavy rain and his alleged intoxication.

But when Trooper Seth Edward of the Maine State Police showed up with a German shepherd named Boris, police were able to track Gordon to his friend’s camper, where he was fast asleep.

“He smelled like alcohol, his speech was slurred, he had passed out. The usual stuff,” Sheehan said.

Police charged Gordon with OUI even though he refused to “blow into the machine,” Sheehan said.

There was about $3,000 to $4,000 worth of damage done to the Oldsmobile, the officer said, and the scene wasn’t cleared until after midnight.
