Husson gets first victory Braves beat MMA at field dedication

BANGOR – Aaron Cowan, Frank Maltais and Mike McCarron scored a goal apiece Thursday afternoon, leading Husson College to a 3-1 men’s soccer victory over Maine Maritime Academy of Castine on the day of the dedication of John Boucher Field.

Khoa Nguyen assisted on two goals for the Braves and Gus Demos provided one. Cliff Urquhart made three saves on six shots for the winners.

Derek Wilding scored an unassisted goal for the Mariners. Daniel Loebel and Chad Flagg combined to make one save on 15 shots.

Bates 1, UM-Farmington 0

At Farmington, Brian Luoma scored the game’s only goal off a free kick at 26:12 of the first half as the 9-3 Bobcats prevailed.

Chris Mansfield and James Kenly combined to stop three shots for Bates College of Lewiston.

Mike Hansen made four saves for the 5-4-2 Beavers.

St. Joseph’s 3, Thomas 1

At Waterville, Mike Herrick notched a goal plus an assist and Mike Erickson added two assists as the Monks beat the Terriers.

Mike Crockett and Ian Morrill added a goal each for 7-5 St. Joseph’s of Standish. Nick Wallace and Jeff Yaeger combined to stop two of 11 shots.

Ben Wheeler scored off a pass from Tom Healy for 5-8 Thomas. Ryan Conley made four saves on 15 shots.

Women’s soccer

Colby 3, U-New England 2

At Biddeford, Stephaine Hicks scored on a corner kick with 7:04 left in regulation to lift the White Mules to victory.

Laura Gremelspacher booted two goals for 6-5-1 Colby of Waterville. Elizabeth Riley stopped three shots in net.

Heather Wilde and Krissy Forman provided the goals for the 7-8 Nor’easters. Melissa Dolbec made four saves in goal.

St. Joseph’s 4, Thomas 1

At Standish, Kelly Cyr had a goal plus an assist as the Monks rolled over the Terriers.

Kelly Primo added two assists for the winners. Katie Doucette, Mary Gill and Demaire Gurney added a goal each. Marissa Regan made 11 saves on 13 shots.

Kate Morrell scored the goal for Thomas of Waterville. Kendra Pelow and Shawnee Lesad combined to stop 15 of 19 shots.

Men’s hockey

New Hampshire 6, Merrimack 3

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Colin Hemingway had two goals and an assist and Darren Haydar scored a goal and added three assists Thursday night to lift New Hampshire to a 6-3 victory over Merrimack.

New Hampshire (2-0, 1-0 Hockey East) outshot Merrimack 47-13.

Merrimack (1-2, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game at 13:25 of the first period when Anthony Aquino scored after a faceoff.
