CAMDEN – A Portland man was hospitalized with head and facial injuries after crashing his car on U.S. Route 1 early Friday.Timothy Roth, 22, formerly of Lincolnville, lost control of his 2003 Toyota sedan on a curve at the top of Springbrook Hill while fleeing from police at 12:46 a.m. Friday, Sgt. Michael Gary said.

Gary said Officer Paul Spear was parked in his cruiser in the downtown when he saw the Toyota enter Main Street traveling the wrong way from Chestnut Street, a one-way street.

Gary said that when Spear turned on his blue lights to pull the Toyota over, it sped away up High Street toward Belfast.

Spear gave chase and found the vehicle off the road on its side after it failed to negotiate a curve.

Roth, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected through one of the sedan’s rear windows.

He suffered lacerations to his head and face and was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport by Camden Ambulance personnel and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Gary said.

The chase covered 2.2 miles, and Roth had driven well over the speed limit before crashing, Gary said.

Although no charges have been filed, Gary said it was believed that alcohol was likely a factor in the crash and that Roth had been administered a blood test. The accident remains under investigation, he said.
