BELFAST – A local man was jailed early Sunday after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, walking off with their baby and biting a police officer who tried to arrest him.
Lee Vernon Williams, 21, of Bay Head Apartments was charged with domestic violence assault, assault on an officer, refusing to submit to arrest, violation of bail conditions, refusing to sign a summons and criminal mischief. He also was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court.
According to the police report, officers were dispatched to the Patterson Hill apartment complex at 1:27 a.m. Sunday to assist a woman who claimed she had been assaulted. When they arrived, they encountered Williams walking down the road with his 1-year-old son, Calvin.
When police approached Williams he initially refused to stop walking and then sat down on the ground with his feet in the road. Officers managed to grab the child from his grasp and when they attempted to place Williams under arrest, he bit State Trooper Don Webber on the finger, according to the police report.
Williams was taken to the Waldo County Jail where bail was set at $500 for the failure to appear for a warrant and $2,500 for the assaults and other charges.
Belfast Officers Rick Smith and Wendall Ward, Maine State Police Sgt. David Tripp and Webber and Waldo County Deputy Sheriff James Greeley took part in the arrest.
