P.I. cars targeted in series of thefts

PRESQUE ISLE – Electronic devices and cash made enticing items for a thief who targeted cars on numerous streets in Presque Isle earlier this week.

But investigators with the Presque Isle Police Department said Thursday the public has pointed them in a helpful direction and they are pursuing leads that could help track down whoever is behind the crime spree.

Eight vehicles, all unlocked, were broken into during the overnight hours of Nov. 30 to Dec. 1. The targeted areas included Delmont, State, Wilson and Park streets.

The thief simply opened the doors to the vehicles and rifled through consoles and glove compartments, stealing cash and electronic items such as iPods and cell phones.

Sgt. Mark Barnes of the Presque Isle Police Department said earlier this week that the public has been very helpful in providing tips since police put out a call for information about the crime.

He said investigating Officer Matt Cummings is following up on leads.

“We have gotten some tips and the public has left some names and other information for him,” Barnes said Thursday.

Police are advising motorists to lock their vehicles and keep valuables hidden from sight.

“These are crimes of opportunity,” Barnes said. “If your vehicle is locked, a thief likely won’t risk being seen or heard trying to break into it.”
