Experts warn of falls, offer ideas for safety

BANGOR – During the holidays and around the year, people can do their part to help keep elderly loved ones safe. Since most falls happen in the home, here are a few precautionary measures to make your home safer for elderly guests:

. Remove items on staircases and the floor that can be tripped on (furniture, books, shoes).

. Keep within easy reach items that the guest may need.

. Make sure your bathtub has a nonslip mat or surface.

. If your guest will need to use the stairs, make sure a hand railing is available and that the area is well-lit.

. Improve the lighting in your home.

. Ensure that your guest wears shoes with support and nonslip soles.
