Edmundston man charged with murder Unidentified male killed in knife fight

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – City police on Wednesday still were withholding the identity of a man who was killed in a fight at a private residence early Tuesday morning.

Andre Rossignol, 46, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in Edmundston Court of Queens Bench.

Rossignol is being held without bail in a detention center at St. Hilaire, about five miles from where he lived. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 2.

According to Inspector Prime Boucher of the Edmundston City Police, the dead man was stabbed with a knife during a fight in Rossignol’s apartment at 304 Victoria St. before 3:45 a.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Saint John, to verify the identity of the man and the exact cause of death. Boucher said the man’s family had not been notified Wednesday because his identity had not yet been verified.

Police received a call about the incident at 3:46 a.m. Tuesday. When police arrived at the apartment, the man already was dead. Rossignol’s apartment was one of several in the building.

Rossignol, according to Boucher, lived alone. He was not a person known to police as a troublemaker.

Boucher said police are unsure of what happened in the apartment. They said the two men, who knew each other, had been drinking and some kind of fight erupted.
