State reviews police use of deadly force

AUGUSTA – A state review of recent incidents involving use of deadly force by Maine police against mentally ill individuals in crisis situations finds no need for changes in law enforcement training and procedures.

The review was conducted by a task force made up of representatives from the criminal justice and mental health systems. They were asked to consider additional resources and protocols that could reduce the need for officers to use deadly force.

The task force found that the actions of the officers involved in the recent cases reflected an understanding of potential mental health issues.

The panel recommended improvements in the way that mental health care providers and police interact during and before a crisis, but said none of the recommendations would have been sufficient to eliminate such situations.
