Husson golf wins NE Div. III honors Alvarez, Pion named All-New England

BREWSTER, Mass. – The Husson College golf team took Division III honors Tuesday in the 67th New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship at The Captains Golf Club.

The Braves finished eighth overall among the 46 Div. I, II, and III teams which participated.

Husson posted 310s Monday and Tuesday for a 620 total, 11 strokes ahead of Amherst (Mass.) College. The University of Rhode Island was the overall champion with 584. Bryant College of Smithfield, R.I., was the top Div. II team at 626.

Hartford’s Dean Carrigan defeated URI’s Mike Carbone in a playoff for the individual title after they tied with two-day totals of 4-under-par 140.

Joe Alvarez led the Braves with rounds of 72 and 73 for 145, tied for fourth overall. Corey Pion had 78-75-153, followed by Bill Hutchins at 81-80-161, Joe Finemore 79-82-161, and Shane Ross at 85-83-168.

Alvarez and Pion were named to the All-New England Div. III team, and Alvarez was also honored for finishing among the top 10 overall.

Bates College in Lewiston, led by Andy Kadin’s 158, was 33rd, and Southern Maine, led by Ashley Fifield and Garik Thiboutot at 174, was tied for 39th.

Women’s soccer

UM-Farmington 4, Thomas 0

At Waterville, the Terriers scored upon their own net twice as the Beavers rolled.

Julia Malek and Michelle Dube provided UMF’s goals and Shannon Maillot and Megan Woodcock had an assist. Alyson Pontbriand made four saves on eight shots.

Shawna Lessard rejected 23 of 31 shots for the Terriers.

Nichols 4, U-New England 0

At Dudley, Mass., Lisa Benson scored two goals, Jennifer King tallied two assists, and Daniela D’Aiello added a goal plus an assist as Nichols rolled past the Nor’Easters of Biddeford in a Commonwealth Coast Conference first-round playoff game.

Melissa Dolbec stopped six of 13 shots on goal for UNE, now 8-9. Jeanna Sullivan made three saves on four shots for the 13-4 Bison.

Field hockey

USM 2, Westfield State 0

At Gorham, Laura Jurkowski and Sarah Dolley each scored unassisted goals as the Southern Maine Huskies won a Little East playoff.

Jessie Superchi made four saves on five shots for 12-7 Southern Maine. Jill Annunciata stopped two of 10 for 8-8 Westfield (Mass.) State.
