Young Spector well positioned to capture amateur tourney

The 67th edition of the Women’s Maine State Golf Association Amateur Championship could be one of two things. On the one hand it could be a coming-out party for young Abigail Spector of Waterville. On the other hand it could be one of the old guard, Pennie Cummings or Martha White, that refuses to reliquish the keys to the title chest just yet.

In either case, what is certian is that there will be some exciting play over at the host club, Brunswick Golf Club.

Spector is coming off a couple of good tournaments and even at the tender age of 15 may be ready to assert herself as Maine’s top golfer. An 11th place finish at the Betsy Rawls National Championship in Wilmington, Del., this past week, finishing as Maine’s top representative in the Women’s New England Amateur Championship and a second place finish in the Amateur Championship last year to Lewiston’s Pennie Cummings at her home course, Waterville Country Club, has positioned Spector as a strong favorite.

“I’m hitting the ball well,” said Spector. ” I couldn’t miss a putt. I hope I can carry that over to next week.”

Even though Spector is 15, she has a wealth of experience since she has been competing in tournaments since she was nine.

“She is playing much more competitive golf than anyone in Maine,” said 13-time champion White of Spector’s tournament schedule.

“It could very well be her year,” said five-time champion Cummings. “She has been playing a lot out of state and that can only help her game.”

Sisters White and Cummings each pointed toward Thea Davis of Plymouth as another player to watch.

The sisters each described their respective games as being up and down. Both feel they have a shot at the title if they can put their games together over the three days.

“My mind has changed from what I thought would win the tournament from the beginning of the year,” said Cummings. “I think two or three over par each day could win.”
