Twins win twice, gain Zone 1 final

BANGOR – Double plays were the giant stop sign on the road to the state American Legion tournament road to Augusta for the Zone 1 Bangor Comrades.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth of Monday’s Zone 1 tournament elimination-round game, Bangor’s Ryan Mick smoked a grounder to Old Town-Orono second baseman John Powers. He reached out to tag T.J. True and threw to first to get Mick, as Casey Catell raced home to tie the game at 7-7.

Infield umpire Pete Webb ruled Powers safe, but Twins coach Dave Paul appealed to first base ump Mike Bordick, who ruled True out, completing the Twins’ double play and preserving their 7-6 victory.

The Twins then beat Brewer 15-6 in the championship game Monday night. The two will play at 11 a.m. today for the zone championship.

“As a coach, you want them to get the call right, whether it goes for you or against you,” Paul said.

In Monday’s first game, Steve Osborne slammed a solo 385-foot home run to the left-center field gap for the Twins winning run in the sixth, before throwing 1 2/3 hitless innings in relief of Cory Young.

The Twins got another call to go their way in the top of the ninth, when Young’s one-out grounder with runners on first and second wound up in the glove of shortstop Tim Patchell, who threw to second baseman Mike Wilcox to cut down John McGlinn.

Wilcox then threw to first to get Young, who was called out by Bordick, but home plate umpire Charlie Reed ruled first baseman Josh Pressley pulled his foot off the bag and Young was safe, after an appeal from Paul.

Bangor starter Darren Stover loaded the bases with a walk but induced a fly-out to get the Comrades out unscathed.

The loss marked Comrades coach Steve Vanidestine’s last game as coach. Vanidestine cited family commitments and his job as Bangor High’s athletic director as the reason for stepping down.

Bangor clambered back from a 6-0 hole with two runs in the fifth, and three in the seventh.

Pressley got the leadoff single in the seventh, and advanced to second on Catell’s single, before Young loaded the bases by hitting Patchell with a pitch.

True’s groundout scored Pressley, and Mick’s groundout scored Catell, before Chris Nill’s grounder to third baseman Jeremy Poulin was dropped, allowing Patchell to score and Nill to get on base, cutting the Twins’ lead to 7-5.

The Comrades got one run in the eighth when Catell’s one-out single scored Tom Waterman, who had walked, before the Twins’ got the bases-loaded double play to end the rally.

In the late game, the Twins got the big inning with a nine-run, four-hit third inning, giving starter Barry Terrill a big cushion to work with for the win.

Brewer starter Mike Kane looked strong early, striking out four of the six batters he faced in the first two innings, but walked six batters in the third before being relieved by Dustin Campbell.

“He was throwing the ball, it looked like he was going to give us a real strong game and then things fell apart,” Falcons coach Dave Gonyar said. “It’s too bad ’cause we’ve played a pretty good ballgame, but we didn’t play great.”

Armed with a 9-1 lead, Terrill held on for the win, giving up 12 hits, six runs, walking five and striking out five.

The Twins’ 12-hit attack was led by Robey Rhoads, who drove in three runs with four singles, and John Montgomery’s triple, single and two RBIs. McGlinn added a two-run double, and Poulin had a two-run single.

Chris Knickerbocker swatted three singles, scored twice, and drove in a run for the Falcons, and David Gross had two towering doubles and knocked in a run.
