CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Andrew Thomas of West Hurley, N.Y., captured Sunday’s Widowmaker Challenge cross country mountain bike race at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Thomas won the pro/elite class by conquering the 27-mile course in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 53 seconds, easily beating second-place finisher Mattew Estes of Hebron, Conn., who clocked a 2:19:09.
By winning the race, Thomas snapped Peter Webber’s three-year winning streak at the Widowmaker. Carrabassett Valley’s Webber had problems all day, blowing a tire four miles into the race and later snapping a brake cable.
Ronald Colavolpe of Portland finished third, followed by Webber and John Funk of Putney, Vt.
Audrey Augustin of Williston, Vt., won the women’s expert crown, followed by Marilyn Ruseckas and Daria Bishop, both of Vermont.
