HAMPDEN – It didn’t take the undefeated Hampden Academy Broncos very long to score the only goal they were to need in Tuesday afternoon’s 2-0 soccer victory over Bangor. Try 23 seconds.
That’s when senior wing midfielder Mike McInnis converted a Mike Roberts pass after Bangor senior goalie Dan Acheson had mishandled a Rob King shot.
The 7-0 Broncos received an insurance goal later in the half from Norwegian exchange student Nasse Wangen and then limited the Rams to very few scoring opportunities thanks to the work of sweeper Ben Pierce, stopper Todd Atkins and goalie Dan Martin.
“All of their defenders have a lot of skill and experience,” said Bangor sophomore striker Matt Soucie, who had the Rams’ best chance of the second half.
Soucie flicked the ball past a Hampden defender and had a potential breakaway eight minutes into the half. However, he didn’t make a good first touch and the ball rolled to the top of the penalty area where the onrushing Martin beat him to it and kicked the ball away.
“I kicked it a little too hard,” said Soucie.
The youthful Rams, now 3-4, had only one other good scoring opportunity in the second half and that came with just a few minutes left. Chris Boley had a volley from 16 yards out that backup goalie Aaron Peppard slapped away.
Peppard replaced Martin with 10:23 left. Martin was shaken up slightly when he came out to pounce on a loose ball.
Hampden’s first goal came about when Acheson dropped King’s high shot and it landed on the foot of Roberts.
“I should have had it,” said Acheson.
“I saw Mike on the right side,” said Roberts, who flicked the ball over to him.
“I was all alone. The ball was about waist-high when it came to me so I just tried to get my foot on top of it,” said McInnis, who simply directed it into the empty net.
Griffin McManus nearly equalized for Bangor moments later off a nice passing play involving Greg Johnston and Elliot Blackstone. McManus sliced a shot labeled for the top corner to Martin’s right but the Hampden goalie extended himself and was able to punch the ball over the bar.
Wangen scored with 18:11 remaining in the half.
Jeff Meinhart lofted a free kick into the penalty area and Acheson lunged over a Hampden player to punch the ball out. However, the ball landed right on the foot of Wangen, who was just outside the penalty area, and he had an open net to shoot at.
“It was just reflex. I volleyed it,” said Wangen, who had also considered trapping the ball and laying it off to a teammate because the ball was bouncing.
The talented, senior-laden Broncos outshot the scrappy Rams 31-12. Martin had three saves and Peppard had one while Acheson finished with 11 saves for the Rams.
