LEWISTON – With a landslide victory over two opponents, attorney Laurier T. Raymond Jr. will become the next mayor of Maine’s second-largest city.

The unofficial tally of Tuesday’s ballots showed Raymond with 5,337 votes, or 71 percent, to 1,818, or 24 percent, for Marc Mason and 316, or 4 percent, for Charles Soule.

Raymond will succeed two-term Mayor Kaileigh Tara, who was barred from seeking re-election because of term limits.

Raymond said he plans to continue along the path laid out by the current city council.

“It’s just the ability to keep the momentum going,” he said. “We have something going in Lewiston, and we need to keep moving in that direction. The perception of Lewiston will not be of a tired old mill town, but a great place to live.”

City Clerk Kathy Montejo said only 11,746 of Lewiston’s 27,666 registered voters went to the polls, a lighter turnout than expected.
