CAMDEN — Fire destroyed the home of Bart and Priscilla Wood in Camden’s Lily Pond neighborhood early Friday morning.
Fire Chief Steve Gibbons said the fire apparently started in the garage and spread quickly, gutting the entire building. “The house appears to be a total loss,” Gibbons said. “Fortunately, the Woods were able to get out safely.”
Gibbons said Priscilla Wood was awakened at about midnight by the smell of smoke. “At first, she thought it was the wood stove, but she saw the flames and got Bart up. They had to go next door to call because their phone line had already burned.”
Gibbons said the state Fire Marshal’s Office will inspect the scene today, but stressed there is no indication the fire was of suspicious origin.
Bart Wood had retired recently from the Camden Fire Department. Gibbons said a fellow firefighter has provided the couple with an apartment to use until their home can be rebuilt.
