Coaches’ opinions differ on attempts at records> One has player go for it, second decides to sit star

Eastern Maine Class C schoolgirl basketball records have been falling like rain since that class began its quarterfinals Monday afternoon.

But what’s interesting are the philosophies behind the two mark-setting contests.

Penquis of Milo senior Kerri Russell broke a single-game, field-goal record with 20 baskets and tied Stephanie Carter of Schenck’s 1988 single-game scoring mark in Monday’s 81-49 win over Narraguagus of Harrington.

Radio called that Russell was close to breaking Carter’s single-game scoring record of 46 points, and Wally Russell, Penquis coach and Russell’s dad, left her in to attempt to break the record.

Kerri Russell actually tied Carter’s mark before leaving the game with 3.9 seconds left.

Wally Russell’s reasoning went along the lines of why not allow her to attempt to get the record when she was so close to it anyway.

A night later, Calais coach Bob McShane’s team broke two single-game records and senior guard Holli Tapley claimed Kristen Chavarie of Schenck’s 1992 single-game 3-point record with six baskets on the way to a 38-point effort.

McShane, whose Blue Devils decimated a younger and less-experienced Fort Fairfield squad 98-42, briefly toyed with the idea of letting Tapley chase the scoring mark but decided against it.

“Holli had a chance to break Russell’s record from last night, but I couldn’t do it,” McShane said. “I couldn’t do it. That’s not important, we’ve never done that.

“Last year, we could’ve scored 120, 130 points a game up here, but we’ve never done that, and I believe that,” he said, also noting a fear that Tapley could get injured while attempting to break the mark.
