University of Maine outdoor track All-American Dereck Treadwell pulled up lame Friday during his qualifying heat in the mile run at the 1997 NCAA Indoor Track and Field championships at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
Treadwell, senior from Milford, suffered a strained calf muscle a week ago and it tightened up on him, according to Maine assistant track coach Ann Maxim.
“It happened at the beginning of the fifth lap. He had a big knot in his calf,” said Maxim. “It just wasn’t in the cards today.”
Eight laps constitutes a mile at the RCA Dome. The final is set for Saturday.
Maxim said Treadwell’s calf felt good before the race and the fact Treadwell couldn’t finish the race “really bothered him.”
She said the field was in a tight pack, including Treadwell, when he was forced to drop out.
She also indicated Treadwell intends to take a few weeks off to rest the injury before starting his outdoor track season.
