Wake Forest’s Odom to appear at May basketball clinic

Coach Dave Odom directed Wake Forest to a 24-7 record, a No. 9 national ranking and into the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last season.

On May 4, Odom will share some of his coaching expertise at Brewer High School, the site of the first HOOPS Inc. Coaches Clinic.

Odom will be joined by the likes of former Seton Hall coach George Blaney, Liberty University coach Jeff Meyer, former Boston Celtic Bob Bigelow, and University of Maine women’s coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie at the event, which runs May 2-4.

Ron Brown of Bangor, the director of HOOPS Inc. and the freshman boys basketball coach at Brewer High School, wants to expose area coaches to some of the brightest coaching minds not only in Maine, but on the national level.

“I was kind of annoyed with how little we have to offer our people in Maine,” said Brown, who organized a similar event 20 years ago that featured Gene Bartow and Johnny Orr.

“You have to go to Boston and New York to get the type of staff we’re bringing in,” he added. “We live in such an isolated area that we lose sight of just how far-removed we are from these types of guys. They are celebrities.”

Brown is expecting upwards of 300 coaches for the three-day clinic, which will include lectures by Boston University coach Dennis Wolff, Liberty associate head coach Randy Dunton, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania women’s coach Sandy Thomas.

Odom is scheduled to speak on Wake Forest’s practice strategy and the Demon Deacons’ offensive system. He will fly in from Las Vegas to appear at the clinic.

Brown credited Dunton with bringing Odom to Maine.

“It was not an easy staff to put together,” Brown said. “Randy is the key for Odom coming here, because he knows him.”

One of Brown’s hopes for HOOPS Inc., which also publishes Maine RoundBALL Magazine and runs summer clinics in Bangor, is to run clinics across the country. Brown said some of the high-profile coaches agreed to appear at a reduced fee.

“I’ve tried to bring in quality people,” Brown said. “I think we’ve got the bases covered on topics and demonstrations.”

Maine is well-represented on the clinic staff by Bob Cimbollek of John Bapst High, Bob Brown of Bonny Eagle, UMaine-Farmington women’s coach Len MacPhee, Cony High girls coach Paul Vachon, and Maine basketball commissioner Pete Webb. Other staff members include Larry Worcester, Brenda Beckwith, Jerry Adams, Doug Roberts, Bob Sinford, Matt Clark, Dennis Mason, Harold Williams, Bob Beatham, and Steve Knox.

Brown, who recently was elected president of the Maine Association Basketball Coaches, is donating a portion of the proceeds to that organization. The cost of the clinic is $70 until April 25, $75 at the door. Coaches can call 945-0179 or 1-888-466-7748 for information.

The clinic also will feature exhibits by sporting goods companies.
