BATH — A Camden-Rockport High School Latin teacher will be arraigned in Bath District Court on May 21 on a charge of stealing lobster traps on Bailey Island.
William Curtis, 47, of Owls Head will be arraigned on two counts of theft and two counts of possession of traps owned by other fishermen, according to a Maine Department of Marine Resources spokesman.
“This is something not in my character,” Curtis said Thursday. “I can’t believe I did it. This was an aberration and I wish it never happened. I am totally, totally embarrassed.”
Curtis has been a part-time fishermen for years and planned to work full time in the industry when he retires from teaching.
DMR Wardens Jonathan Cornish and Michael Fitzpatrick were alerted by Bailey Island resident Josh Allen of suspicious activity around his traps on March 15. Allen said he had lost numerous traps recently.
The wardens stopped Curtis’ pickup truck and found 17 lobster traps which did not belong to him, along with several strands of rope, the DMR reported.
Curtis was summoned to court by DMR wardens and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. DMR officials investigated further and found 14 stolen traps at Curtis’ Owls Head home.
The DMR reported that Curtis was cooperative and admitted taking the traps.
