Police calling Monson death `suspicious’

MONSON — State police detectives are calling “suspicious” the death of Edward Simpson, 58, of Monson, who was found at his two-story Main Street home Sept. 7.

Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said Simpson, who was a retired school teacher and was single, was found unconscious in his living room by a relative about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 7.

“At this point, it is a suspicious death,” he said.

Two state police detectives spent Saturday in Monson working on the case.

McCausland said Simpson’s body was taken to the Kennebec Medical Center in Augusta where Dr. Henry Ryan, the state’s chief medical examiner, performed an autopsy, which was concluded early Sunday afternoon.

He said the cause of death had been determined, but “because of investigatory reasons” officials would not release any more information Sunday night.

He said an ambulance from Dover-Foxcroft and the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department were called. He said cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered by ambulance personnel, and later Simpson died at Mayo Regional Hospital.
