AUGUSTA — The house committee on Transportation has proposed a name for the new bridge connecting Bangor and Brewer.
According to Rep. Richard Campbell, the new name was unanimously passed by the House Committee on Transportation and is expected to be heard by the full House in a few days.
The panel recommends the bridge be named The Penobscot Bridge with the name printed in the official language of the Penobscot Nation underneath in parenthesis as [SEE LIBRARY MICROFILM FOR PENOBSCOT LANGUAGE TEXT] (pronounced ben-a-wob-skeag).
“I think that this new bridge will help to revitalize the Bangor-Brewer area by bringing the two communities close together. This name symbolically reflects…. the cultural influences from the past,” said Rep. Campbell. “Honoring the earliest settlers of this area is important if we are to keep in touch with our cultural ties.”
The new name for the bridge, which is expected to be completed by July 1997, was chosen from a regional contest by a name selection committee consisting of legislators, city council members and members of the Bangor and Brewer historical societies.
