Sullivan, Milo students win awards at science symposium> 12 high schools to compete in Down East Regional Envirothon

Two students from area high schools have been honored in the 27th annual Northern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held at the University of New Hampshire recently. Adam Fisher of Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan took home a second place award for his research on cell volume regulation in skate hepatocytes under the guidance of his science teacher, William Townsend. Nathan Hayes of Penquis Valley High School in Milo took home a third place award for his work on atrazine in Maine’s surface and ground water supply under the guidance of his science teacher Virgil Valente.

Searsport District High School presented the Student of the Month Award in April to Jonah O’Roak. The award process includes nomination, review and selection of members of the student body who best demonstrate academic progress, school citizenship, personal deportment and participation in activities outside the classroom.

Orono High School’s Michael Pare has won the Service Merchandise Scholarship. The award, a tribute to Mary and Harry Zimmerman, who founded the company and had a strong belief in higher education, recognizes Pare’s exceptional classroom abilities and outstanding participation in school and community activities.

Twelve area high schools, representing 20 teams, will compete May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Down East Regional Envirothon at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland. Bucksport, Central, Jonesport-Beals, Narraguagus, Sumner, Calais, Bangor, Searsport, Washington Academy, Machias Memorial, Islesboro Central and Woodland are competing to win one of three slots for the state finals on May 29 at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum in Bradley.

Another seven schools with 13 teams will compete May 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Will Hinckley in the Central Regional Envirothon competition. The competition there is sponsored by the Somerset County conservationl district. The schools sending teams are: Nokomis Regional, Forest Hills, Marti Stevens Learning Center, Skowhegan, Piscataquis Community, Mount View and Searsport.

The first place team from the state competition will travel to Pennsylvania in August to compete at the nationals.

At the regional competition five-member teams will be tested in five areas including forestry, wildlife, soils, aquatics and pest management.

The Woodland High School Arts Festival will be held Thursday, May 31 at 6 p.m. There will be two short drama performances — the Drama Club will perform “The Ledge” and the drama class will perform “The Devil and Daniel Webster.” Other performances that evening will be solos and group selections by the school’s choral and instrumental band students. Also scheduled are the “Pin Cookies,” the school’s rock band. Two- and three-dimensional art works will be on display.

Maine Central Institute has named senior Alycia Kerr, daughter of David and Luanne Kerr of Pittsfield as Student of the Month for March. She is recognized for her continued leadership and extensive involvement in the school for the second time this year. She recently received the Maine Principal’s Leadership Award and recognition as a scholar-athlete.
