STANDISH – Exactly a week ago, St. Joseph’s took advantage of an error-filled performance by Husson to shut out the Braves in a doubleheader by collecting 23 total runs.

It was a different Husson team Friday in the Maine Athletic Conference tourney as the Braves pushed St. Joe’s before losing 5-2.

It was a 2-2 game entering the bottom of the fifth.

Husson, which defeated the University of New England 6-3 in the first game, will play UNE Saturday at noon in the continuation of the double-elimination tournament. St. Joe’s will play the winner of that game at 2 p.m. for the MAC title.

UM-Farmington was eliminated by UNE 4-3, after falling to St. Joe’s 4-2.

Against Husson, St. Joe’s Jenn Kenney pitched five innings, but was relieved by the league’s Player of the Year Kellee Murphy in the sixth after the Braves tied it 2-2. Before Murphy could play cavalry, Husson killed itself, committing two errors in the bottom of the fifth that gave the Monks three runs.

“When they caught up, coach told me to warm up. And even when we went ahead, he still wanted me to go in,” said Murphy, who improved to 17-2.

Down 2-0 going into the fifth, the Braves scored two runs off two Monks errors. First, Steph York walked, then, after Kenney retired the next two batters, she walked Jen Russ.

That’s when Husson freshman Erika Nadeau, who went 3-for-4 in the first game with two runs scored, sparked the Braves for the second game in a row. Nadeau ripped a bomb to left field that Erin Gaffney got a glove on but dropped, allowing two runs to score to tie it.

However, in the second game, the Braves couldn’t get on top. In the bottom of the fifth, they came back with two errors and the Monks plated three runs.

Nadeau, named the MAC Rookie of the Year, Friday, was frustrated with the Braves fielding.

“We’re pretty disappointed,” said Nadeau, who went 2-for-3 against St. Joe’s. “We had too many errors. We beat ourselves. We let them get by us. We stopped defensivley. And we stopped hitting.”

Yet by the way St. Joseph’s first-year coach Curt Smyth was talking, you would have thought he coached the Braves as he echoed the same feelings.

“Husson got some momentum and we were slipping,” Smyth said.

At Hempsted, N.Y., the University of Maine softball team will be playing out of the losers’ brackett in Saturday’s America East tourney following a 6-1 loss to top seed Hofstra Friday afternoon. The Black Bears opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over the University of Vermont. Maine will next play Drexel today at 8:30 a.m.

In the second game, Melissa Creegan plated the lone Black Bear run on a single as Mary Wells, Kathryn Murphy, and Katie Gamache also chipped in a single.

In the first game, Maine pitcher Jen Burton went the distance, striking out six, walking one, and allowing three hits to earn the shutout over the Catamounts.

Nicole Gamblin ripped a pair of RBI-singles to lead the Black Bear attack. Creegan and Puls also rapped two singles apiece.

Baseball Husson, Lyndon State split

At Bangor, Takeo Nakamura came off the disabled list with a bang by slamming a bases-loaded double in the second inning to put Husson on track for an 8-4 win in the opener.

Lyndon State squeaked out a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

The Braves trailed 4-0 in the second when Nakamura doubled to drive in two runs, and John McCarty drove in two more with his single. Sandy McCuaig added a double, single and RBI, and Andy Boure singled twice and plated a run.

Freshman righthander Dennis Roy struck out 12 and walked two to go the distance for Husson.

In the second game, Barrett Williams cranked out a two-run home run in the sixth and singled, and Aaron Largay added a two-RBI double in the sixth for Husson.

At Unity, Kurt Beiermeister scored three goals and dished out three assists to lead the Braves to a win in their final game of the spring season. Fred Murphy notched four goals and Richie Trott added two for Husson. Kenny Delker made 21 saves.

Dave Yates and Jamie Selda each scored a goal for Unity.
