BREWER – Bangor’s mantra this season has been: If you make the plays in practice, you will make them in a game.
The Rams made all the defensive plays necessary to ruin Brewer’s first schoolgirl softball night game at Coffin Field with a 4-2 victory Tuesday.
“We just go out to practice every day and we work very hard,” sophomore shortstop Kori Dionne said. “We know that we’ve got to work hard because there are a lot of people out there, and on any given day, any team could come at you and that’s what we’ve got to get ready for every day in practice.”
Bangor and Brewer were a statistical match in virtually every category except in the error column, where Brewer committed five errors to Bangor’s one.
“They played good defense,” Brewer coach Kelly Cookson said.
Rams pitcher Melanie Deyone struck out one and didn’t walk a batter while giving up seven hits. Brewer’s Kristen Frey also gave up seven hits and walked one but struck out no one.
Deyone notched 41 strikes in 54 throws. Frey’s pitches found the strike zone 56 times in 78 attempts.
While the Rams fed off Deyone’s efficiency, the Witches struggled to back up Frey and gave up three unearned runs.
“Our defense played excellent tonight and I needed them,” Deyone said. “They were hitting the ball off me and I needed them behind me.”
The Witches trailed 2-1 by the fifth inning and lost crucial ground in a two-run fifth by the Rams.
Frey fumbled with Deyone’s leadoff grounder and allowed Deyone to get on base.
Brewer third baseman Emily Sevigny made a tough diving catch of Kori Dionne’s pop-up bunt for the first out. Kristi Bowden singled the full-count offering to put Rams at first and second, but left fielder Jolene Robichaud overthrew third in an attempt to keep Deyone at second.
Deyone and Bowden advanced a base on the error to set up Renee Richardson’s RBI single and Amanda Stevens’ RBI on a fielder’s choice for the Rams’ 4-2 lead.
Bowden put Bangor on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left to score Dionne, who led off the game with a triple to the left-center gap.
The Rams backed it up with an insurance run in the second coming off a pair of Witch errors. Brianne Slamin benefited from Sevigny’s fielding error and moved to second on Rachel Kelly’s fielder’s choice before scoring when shortstop Leslie Trott overthrew first base on Kristi Holland’s grounder.
Brewer closed the gap in the inning’s bottom half when Tami Corey’s fielder’s choice scored Erin Dufour. Dufour whacked a single and advanced to second on right fielder Slamin’s misplay before heading to third on a passed ball.
On Dufour’s single, Paula Price attempted to score from first, but was caught on a relay throw from second baseman Kelly to catcher Kenny for the out. Price had reached on a leadoff single.
The Witches charged back again in the fifth when Mandi Brigalli smacked a two-out single to left. Trott slammed a double to deep right field to plate Brigalli but got caught trying to stretch it into a triple for the third out.
