One veteran high school football coach has been replaced and another may step down later this summer.

Brad Bishop was named to the Lawrence High School post last week, replacing longtime coach Pete Cooper.

In Millinocket, Art Greenlaw is expected to vacate his position as head coach at Stearns after 17 years, according to Athletic Director Don Dow.

The head coaching job is not new to Bishop, who has been the boss at Winthrop and Morse of Bath.

Also a full-time athletic director at the Lawrence, Bishop coached the linebackers last year and feels that knowing the kids will help the transition.

“We have great kids, this is an uplifting change for me,” said Bishop.

Bishop also credits Cooper with creating a positive learning environment for both kids and coaches. Bishop plans to get involved with the area youth program, which he feels is the best tackle football program in the state.

Line coach Mike Mealey has also decided to step down with Cooper after 20 years with the program.

At Millinocket, Greenlaw is also the principal at the junior high school and has found it very difficult to balance both jobs.

A decision on Greenlaw’s replacement will be made at a July school board meeting. The board is hoping to find a qualified replacement to replace Greenlaw, according to Dow.

In other coaching news, former Machias High school star Kenny Johnson is returning to his alma mater as the boys basketball coach.

Johnson, a second-team All-Maine selection in 1988, was named by the Machias School Board Thursday night to replace Tobin Slavin, who left after last season for an assistant coaching job at Colby College in Waterville.
