Old Town and Bucksport remained unbeaten and Bangor West was two outs away from its third win before the rain fell as the second week of District 3 Little League tournament action got under way Monday.

Old Town topped Katahdin 8-3, Bucksport edged Holbrook 5-4, and Bangor West led Bangor East 17-4 with one out in the top of the fourth when the game was suspended due to rain.

In elimination games, Machias knocked Coastal out of the double-elimination tourney by a 10-4 score and Orono-Veazie ended Moosabec’s hopes with a 12-4 victory.

Orono-Veazie swings back into action today, traveling to face Brewer. Also today, Machias travels to Holden to face Holbrook.

On Wednesday, Katahdin will face the winner of the Eastport vs. Millinocket contest.

And on Thursday, Old Town plays the winner of the suspended Bangor East-Bangor West showdown, and Calais takes on Bucksport.

Machias 10, Coastal 4

At Blue Hill, Nick Reynolds pitched a two-hitter and hit three singles to lead Machias to the win over host Coastal.

Reynolds struck out six and walked seven.

Jared Gray hit two doubles for 1-1 Machias while Steven Colbeth and Todd Stevens each singled twice.

A Chris Candage double and Colby Allen single were the only hits for Coastal, which was eliminated with a 1-2 record.

Orono-Veazie 12, Moosabec 4

At Orono, Josh Keefe’s two doubles sparked Orono-Veazie to its victory over Moosabec in a game shortened to four innings because of storm activity.

Daren Kelley and Jared Alley hit back-to-back homers in the third inning for Moosabec.

Old Town 8, Katahdin 3

At Old Town, a seven-run fifth inning helped give Old Town the win over Katahdin.

For Old Town, catcher Brad Goody tripled while Andy Pease and Mike Russell both doubled. Russell drove in two runs and Pease drove in one. Ryan Brown singled and had two RBIs.

For Katahdin, K. Ehrler hit a triple and a double, and Matt Malone and B. Sullivan both singled.

Battle of Bangor suspended

At 13th Street Complex in Bangor, Bangor West sent 12 batters to the plate in each of the first two innings but was denied a victory over rival Bangor East by a late-game thunderstorm.

Bangor West led 17-4 and was poised to take a shortened win via the 10-run rule when the rain started with one out and Bangor East batting in the top of the fourth. Two Bangor West pitchers combined to hold Bangor East hitless.

The game will be resumed from that point, with Bangor West needing just two outs to post the win.

Bangor West’s number nine hitter, left fielder John Patchell, provided the key blow, smacking a line drive three-run homer to left in the first inning. Patchell drove in another run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second.

Andrew Treadwell struck out seven batters and gave up no hits in his 2 1/3-inning stint. He also walked six and gave up all four runs. Reliever Mike LaRochelle pitched an inning of no-hit, no-run ball, striking out one.

Treadwell also rapped two doubles and a single, drove in three runs and scored three times.

John Huhn hit three singles for Bangor West.

Ryan Levesque walked twice and scored for Bangor East.

Bucksport 5, Holbrook 4

At Holden, despite just two base hits, Bucksport scored five runs to come edge Holbrook.

Bucksport’s Asa Jones and relief pitcher Phil Harvey provided both of Bucksport’s hits, both singles.

Patrick Healy smashed a triple for Holbrook, and Bryan Snyder doubled. H.J. Hunter doubled, while Wally Tardiff, Travis Stewart, Caleb McGary, and Sam Gray all singled.
