OAKFIELD – A Houlton woman had to be extricated from her vehicle Thursday night and transported to the hospital with leg injuries.

Tabitha Doughty, 26, was transported to the Houlton Regional Hospital with a broken leg. She was later transported to the Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Maine State Police Trooper Josh Dangelo said Doughty was northbound on I-95 when she fell asleep at the wheel. Her vehicle struck the guardrail, and stopped, blocking both northbound lanes of traffic.

Also injured was one of four dogs that were in the car. The dog was also taken for treatment.

The accident happened at about 9:30 p.m. Her 1996 four-door sedan was demolished in the accident. Police estimated damage at about $5,000.

Traffic was stopped in the area for about two hours while the roadway was cleared.

Doughty was extricated from her vehicle by firefighters from the Island Falls Fire Department.

The Houlton Fire Department was also at the scene. She was transported to the hospital from the scene by the Houlton Ambulance Service.
