Unity College sets inauguration

UNITY — Wilson G. Hess, Unity College’s new president, will be inaugurated at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in ceremonies also commemorating the college’s 25th anniversary.

An anniversary and inaugural dance will be held at 8:30 p.m. with Al Corey and his orchestra playing at a reception.

Hess served from 1977 to 1989 in several capacities at the college, first as registrar and assistant to the dean of the college, then in academic affairs, admissions and cooperative education. He was chairman of the humanities center and was a history professor.

He led the conservation law enforcement program, which enrolls more than 25 percent of the student body, from associate to its baccalaureate status. He also served as chairman of the Academic Long-Range Planning Committee, developing a five-year plan for academic progress, educational equipment and faculty staffing.

He left Unity College in 1989 to serve as dean of the college at Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vt., where he supervised academic affairs, experiential learning and student life.

He earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Baltimore, a master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono, pursued doctoral studies in history at the University of Maine and performed post-graduate study in environmental law at the Vermont Law School.
