Orrington farmer Payne dies

Russell G. Payne, 91, a longtime Orrington resident and well-known farmer, died Wednesday.

Since 1956, Payne had operated a vegetable farm and roadside stand in Orrington. He doled out advice as well as vegetables and fruits.

Many local gardeners didn’t hesitate to ask Payne about their leggy tomatoes, pest populations and the right time to plant.

“There are no secrets, really,” Payne told a reporter in 1990. “It’s just hard work and good judgment.”

Payne’s farm operation included 35 acres and four greenhouses. For many local residents, the earliest sign of spring was the sight of wood smoke coming from the chimneys of Payne’s greenhouses.

Payne was active in several farm organizations and served as a judge at fairs.

He is survived by four sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one brother.

Payne’s son Ralph has been a fixture at the farm stand during recent years. But Russell was still there, offering the advice and friendship.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at All Souls Congregational Church in Bangor with the Rev. James Haddix officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
