Rockwell Kent admirer

I enjoyed Jenna Russell’s review of the “Maine at Work” show at the Farnsworth Museum, especially her unabashed rapture over Rockwell Kent’s “Toilers of the Sea.” Her enthusiasm helps takes the sting out of the mistreatment Kent received at the hands of Grace Glueck a while back in The New York Times.

Kent fans will be glad to know that several shows of his work are either up or in the offing. “Rediscovering Rockwell Kent: Graphic & Decorative Arts,” drawn from Eliot Stanley’s collection, is at the Grolier Club in New York City through Nov. 7. Stanley, former head of the Baxter Society in Portland, has a significant collection of Kentiana.

The Monhegan Museum will inaugurate its new display space next July with a Kent show, and another exhibition will be mounted at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., in July 2000. Finally, a book featuring the Kent canvases from the Hermitage in Russia will be publshed next year by Down East Books.

Long live Kent! And thank you, Ms. Russell, for reminding us of his greatness. Carl Little Mount Desert
