Central Maine teams win> Top-seeded Cony, Winslow, PCHS host title games

There were no real surprises during Wednesday’s Eastern Maine schoolgirl field hockey semifinals held around the region.

Top-seeded Cony of Augusta cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 5 Messalonskee of Oakland and No. 2 Skowhegan shut out No. 3 Nokomis of Newport 3-0. The Rams entertain the Indians in Saturday’s final.

In Class B, No. 1 Winslow held off No. 4 John Bapst of Bangor 2-1 and No. 2 Waterville nipped No. 3 Foxcroft Academy 1-0, setting up Saturday’s championship contest at Winslow.

Top-seeded Piscataquis Community of Guilford will play for regional supremacy at home Saturday after beating No. 4 Dexter 2-1. The Pirates await No. 2 Hall-Dale of Farmingdale, a 2-1 victor over No. 3 Winthrop after two overtimes and two sets of penalty corners.

Class A

Skowhegan 3, Nokomis 0

At Skowhegan, Tara Bedard netted two goals as 13-3 Skowhegan earned the win.

Phyllis Ward had a goal and Fawn Albert saved all seven shots she faced for the winners. Christine Stevens, Gina Dinan and Kim Leo each added an assist.

Juillian Oliver made 10 saves on 13 shots for 12-4 Nokomis.

Cony 4, Messalonskee 0

At Cony, Lauren LaRochelle had two goals and Tracey Frye collected three assists in the Rams’ win.

Both of LaRochelle’s goals came late in the second half, one with 2:29 left from Shannon Finnegan and another with one second left from Kim Hinds. Finnegan tallied a first-half goal and Janet Reise had a second-half goal, both recipients of Frye assists.

Crystal Nedick made six saves on seven shots for 16-1 Cony, and Dawn Zimba made 17 saves on 29 shots for 10-5-1 Messalonskee.

Class B

Winslow 2, John Bapst 1

At Winslow, Aimee Bussiere’s penalty shot goal at 11:16 of the second half helped the Black Raiders advance.

Kira Young scored an unassisted goal for John Bapst with 2:12 left in the first. Winslow’s Kristy Ferran tied the game off a Lori Michaud feed 24:51 into the second half.

Emily Roy made three saves on four shots for 17-0 Winslow, and Stephanie Philbrick had 11 saves on 12 shots for 11-5 John Bapst.

Waterville 1, Foxcroft 0

At Waterville, Kelly Smith’s unassisted goal 22:22 into the second half helped the Purple Panthers avoid the upset.

Melissa Denis hit a ball to Foxcroft keeper Cassie Hoffman, which deflected to Smith. After Smith attempted to knock it home, she caught her own rebound and sent it to the far side of the cage for the score.

Amy Champagne made eight saves on nine shots for 12-3 Waterville, and Hoffman made nine saves on 16 shots for 10-7 Foxcroft.

Class C

Hall-Dale 2, Winthrop 1

At Hall-Dale, it took two overtimes and two sets of penalty corners before Shelly Barry won the game for the Bulldogs.

Barry’s shot was from Christie Montieth on Hall-Dale’s first chance in the second phase of penalty corners. Kim Gray scored in the second period of regulation off a Monteith assist for 13-2-1 Hall-Dale. Emily Garofalo made five saves on five shots.

Emily Dooling had Winthrop’s only goal, unassisted two minutes into the first period. Elissa Shuman made 12 saves on 15 shots for the 10-4-2 Ramblers.
