Victorian Christmas set in Searsport Marine museum event this weekend

SEARPORT – The Penobscot Marine Museum will hold its annual community Victorian Christmas Celebration this weekend, Dec. 7-8. An open house will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday.

The museum’s historic Fowler-True-Ross House will be decorated by area florists. The kitchen will be decorated by Sheehan’s Florist while the Flower Patch will create the parlor floral arrangements and garlands. Lougees will decorate the Game Room; volunteers Doris Fahlberg and Mary Ruoff will cast their magic in the captain’s study. On the second floor, Silkweeds will create a Christmas atmosphere in the master bedroom and Nancy Fancies will decorate the hall and sitting room. The child’s bedroom will be done by Holmes Greenhouse & Flower Shop.

Both Friday and Saturday, the “Festival of Trees” will be open for viewing in the vestry building. Trees will be decorated by area businesses and organizations with the public voting for their favorite tree.

In the Museum Store 5-7 p.m. Friday, Castlebay will perform harp music. The group weaves together the timeless traditions of Maine’s nautical legacy and its poignant Scottish and Irish heritage, blending traditional and contemporary musical styles. Also Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m., “Lighthouse Lullaby” author Kelly Briggs will be on hand to sign books.

At 6 p.m. Friday, museum educator Hugh Lane will hold story time for children of all ages in the Fowler-True-Ross House.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Penobscot Bay Singers will present a holiday concert in the First Congregational Church on Church Street. The church with its historic stained-glass windows and holiday decorations will provide a beautiful setting for this performance. Founded in 1973 by Robert Coller, the Penobscot Bay Singers have been performing throughout the midcoast area for the past 25 years. Donations to the group are welcome.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, the First Congregational Church of Searsport will play host to “Breakfast with Santa” from 8 to 10 a.m..

At the museum, the Victorian Christmas will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with both the Fowler-True-Ross House and the Festival of Trees open for viewing. At 11 a.m., illustrator Jeannie Brett will sign copies of her work “L is for Lobster” in the Museum Store. From noon to 2 p.m., Santa will greet children in the Festival of Trees. At 2 p.m. on the second floor of the vestry, puppeteer Nancy Nye will give a free performance of “A Soulful Christmas Shoe” for children of all ages. Nye, a well-known performer of MilkweedPuppet Theater, wrote the script, built the set, created two of the puppets, and recorded her own background music and sound effects. The free performance promises to delight people of all ages.

Visitors to Victorian Christmas also will want to visit the Nativity scenes from 10 a.m. and live Nativity performed at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church on Route 1 in Searsport. From 11 a.m. to 1p.m., a luncheon will be served to benefit the church.
