Hancock boy struck by car dies

ELLSWORTH — An 11-year-old boy died late Wednesday night after being struck by a car on Route 1 in Ellsworth earlier in the day.

According to Officer Bart Tokas of the Ellsworth Police Department, James Childers of Hancock died at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The boy had been walking with a friend on Route 1 near the intersection with Route 184 when the accident occurred late Wednesday afternoon. Tokas said the boy was on his way to the Wayside Market and apparently was trying to cross the busy road. The boy ran into the path of a car driven by Gerald York, 46, of Millinocket.

The officer said Childers suffered trauma to the head and was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and later transferred to EMMC.

Tokas said he and other officers expect to be at the scene Friday morning to reconstruct the accident.
