Families share holiday wants with readers

As we begin another week and count down the days until Christmas, we think about the many things we’d like to do. Shopping for and wrapping gifts, writing and sending Christmas cards, preparing and sharing foods, planning family get-togethers and, importantly, reaching out to the less fortunate among us.

There are children, families and individuals in many of our communities and neighborhoods who will not feel the joy we do this season. Their only hope is to get through the holidays with the very basics – food, warm clothing and a toy or two for the little ones. Please help The Salvation Army bring these things to them by contributing to the Santa’s Helper Fund.

Here are excerpts from letters recently received by The Salvation Army:

“I still have two children at home and have always tried to give them the kind of traditional Christmas I had growing up. I am usually a self-help person but over the last few years have been unable to work because of medical problems. My children have never been selfish, always helping others. Any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated both by myself and my children. Thank you so much.”

“I have recently become a single parent. I have not paid any bills except my rent and car payment and things the baby needs. And even then, I need to turn to family for food and diapers. And even family can only help so much. I had a fairytale Christmas planned but my life fell apart. I cannot provide this fairytale Christmas for my son. I would trade everything I have to have the good times back and to see my son smile because of something as simple as a toy. That’s all I need or want for myself for Christmas this year – to see my son’s face light up. And because of the Salvation Army, Christmas will be possible this year.”

“I was in a car accident in June and I got my back hurt so I haven’t been able to go back to work and I had to sign up for State aid and I’ve got six children to give Christmas to. I really could use the extra help. My husband can’t work because of his mental health problems. Thank you.”

“My husband just lost his job. We also lost state assistance. I am only making $2.75 per hour plus tips – that just barely pays rent.”
