BANGOR – Mike Brooks’ second-period goal snapped a 1-1 tie and Adam Standley scored what proved to be the game-winner with 10:13 left in the game as Hampden upended John Bapst 4-2 in a mutual season-opener in high school hockey action Saturday.
Hampden’s Pat Bailey and John Bapst’s Zach Means swapped first-period goals before Brooks scored the only goal of the second period.
John Motta cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:30 left but Mike Brown sewed it up with an empty-netter.
Garrett MacGowen made 27 saves for Hampden and Dan Leighton stopped 26 shots for John Bapst.
Motta had an assist for John Bapst and Chris Bearor and Greg Taylor picked up assists for Hampden.
There was a moment of silence before the game for the late Ray Thibodeau, who had coached John Bapst since it instituted hockey in 1991-92. He resigned after last season to spend more time with his grandson Cameron. Thibodeau died of kidney failure in September.
The John Bapst players, who are now coached by former Bangor Youth Hockey Association president and coach Doug Damon, have a brown medallion sewed into their uniforms with the inititals “R.T.” on them.
